"The Grand Mufti Of Google."   Another case of mistaken identity hits the pages of the New York Times. This time, it's Qu'ranical.

This e-mail with the pushy subject line was unlike any other I had received. “My friend, who lives in Sweden, wants to get married to a Swedish woman,” it began in Latinized Urdu. “But this marriage will be a fake marriage.” Tahir, the sender, explained that his friend was already married to a woman in Pakistan but wanted to marry a Swedish woman to obtain Swedish citizenship. Tahir’s friend wanted him to deliver fake Pakistani divorce papers by forging both his and his wife’s signatures. Oblivious to the forgery, the Swedes would allow Tahir’s friend to marry, putting the secret bigamist on a path to Swedish citizenship and all that it offered. I doubted that either of the women were privy to the elaborate scheme.

It was Tahir’s heedlessly narrow question at the end that surprised me the most: “If I forge the signatures on the divorce papers, will that really mean my friend will be divorced from his wife?” It was this small, rather arcane detail about God’s view of the marital bond that nagged his conscience — not the various international and domestic laws and criminal codes that he would break. “Would you do me a favor and resolve this problem?”

"Body Bazaar: In the poorest countries of the world, kidneys mean cash."   Of all the topics you don't want to invite into your blog's comment threads, third-world organ harvesting should be at the top of your list. Webzine describes how eager Third World residents are to sell their organs for cash, turning their site into an instant magnet for tales of woe and offers of fresh human kidneys.

Hi All,

This is my first blog… I am an Art + Drama teacher at a school in Nottingham.
I have been asked to research an art project for a Brazil theme week with the year 7 group ( 11-12 year olds).
I am enormously impressed by the work of Oscar Niemeyer and think that his work and ideals would be exciting and inspiring for my youngsters. Does anyone know if I can email his office to show the children’s work to the team, or to shout hello from 170 children to the great Oscar?

Thanks Lindsey [redacted]

Hi Ellen

I just want to say “Thank you so much” for all the wonderful things you do and all the love you give to people!!

2009, has been the WORST YEAR in my Life, but I sit and watch your show almost every day, and just cry. To think there are still people in this world that do so much good for others!!!

We immegrated from South Africa to Australia in 2007 as there were Land Claims on our Farms, so there was no future for our children as far as farming is concerned, life is not easy here, specially us South African’s being so spoilt.

My most adorable father (my Hero) took ill in January 2009, it broke my heart not being there all the time for him, he sadly passed away on the 23 July 2009, 1 and half weeks of being back in Australia my father in law had a massive heart attack, so back we went to South Africa to go and support him. Thank goodness God was good to us and the Drs pulled him through.

Just being back again 2 weeks, my daughters father in law passed away from a massive heart attack. The sad thing is they had just had a Baby Boy (Pieter) and named him after Grandpa, who fortunately saw him just after birth, but they were going to spend Christmas with them in South Africa so that they could get to know Pieter better.

My Son and his wife were expecting their 2nd Baby, but she miss carried at 8 weeks, which was traumatic for all of us!!!

But the wonderful thing is Ellen, when I sit and watch your show, and hear the people appauld you, and you give it back to them, it feels as if your energy comes to me as well!!! I love the way you dance and how you chuckle!!! I am no celeb, but it would be the biggest priviledge to be able to be and see you life!!!! So how about taking a trip to Perth Australia, so that I can just shake your hand and thank you for bringing some much JOY into my life every day!!!!!

God Bless you and once again thank you.

Fondest Regards
Celia [redacted]

"instantET: The "Entertainment Tonight" TV."   TV show Entertainment Tonight launches a Windows widget; blogger comments; a trillion commenters take the opportunity to complain about how they don't like ET but can't find an email address for the show. And one Canadian voices some international relations gripes, hoping that ET can smooth over tensions.

Today there was a school shooting in Montreal, Quebec. Up here in Canada the radio and news are covering the event. So far 2 people have died. I’m writing on this board because CNN only had information on their website but they continue to ignore the incident. Not once did they mention it on tv.

I find this a disgrace and this is a prime example as to why some Canadians feel like Americans ignore us in critical times. Just last week Canadians were killed by friendly fire by Americans and we forgive you. It’s no one’s fault. But then something like this happens and it just makes us feel like you don’t care.

SO…this is a great opportunity for someone like ET to step up and show some class. Report on this issue and people who don’t normally watch ET will. It’ll show you have a lot more layers than just being a celebrity gossip show.

And if you don’t find that Important enough…here’s some gossip:

Ontario has a no-smoking indoors policy and it’s been made law now. SO far, everyone has been okay with it. Smokers just wait and smoke outside. HOwever, during the TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL this rule has been broken. And who broke it? None other than SEAN PENN.

It may seem like a silly rule to you but to me, a person who’s sister had cancer twice, I know how serious something like this is. THere’s an overwhelming amount of research saying that second hand smoke kills. Even a few exposures causes damage. So when I hear that SEAN PENN has broken the law (even for smoking) and more so, he’s not been charged, it makes me sick. i DON’T care if he’s a celebrity, rich or famous. He broke the law and should be charged.

I’m so sick and tired of people feeling ‘sorry’ for celebrities or treating them like gods. They’re not above the law.

trading in bio-fuels in the hope to cut air pollution made by fossile fuels. CO2 must be worked on in a much harder form. I am set in dedicating my life to the reduction of GHG via means of introducing SVO into the engines of power generation and machinery. Of course I need help, who doesn’t. This time we live in will see the changes of energy production turn.
All I want is to build my empier, and keep it running for the future generations of Great Grand kids and longer.
Once the show is up and running, it will be time to bring out the book of ideas and inventions gathered during those smoggy nights down the squat.

"Dhoom 2 White Wallpaper."   You don't even need to mention an actor to draw his followers to your site. Just post a nearly-blank downloadable wallpaper with the name of a film he was in -- in this case, Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan from the movie Dhoom 2. Even the word "wallpaper" in your URL will not dissuade them.
